Choir Audition Information 2026-27​

Who Can Audition?
All students attending JHS in 2026-2027 are welcome to audition—no experience needed! We will teach you everything you need to know.

Audition Requirements
  • For Curricular Choirs and Vocal Ensembles (Concert Choir, Chorale, Aurora, and/or Cantus): Complete the Choir & Ensembles audition. This audition will also determine who is selected to represent JHS at SD All State Chorus in October. 
  • For Show Choir (Revelry, Legacy): You must complete the Choir & Ensembles audition AND attend the Show Choirs auditions on March 28. 
  • For Vocal Jazz (Declaration): You must complete the Choir & Ensembles audition AND attend the Vocal Jazz auditions on March 28.

For Current Choir Students: Auditions will take place during regular choir classes in mid-late March. Middle school choir students will be pulled individually from choir classes for auditions.

For Students Not Currently in Choir: To audition, schedule an appointment by emailing [email protected].

​Audition Components
  • Range Check: Warm-ups to assess vocal range and determine voice part.
  • Vocal Performance:
    • Sopranos & Tenors: America (My Country, 'Tis of Thee)
    • Altos & Basses: America, The Beautiful
    • Performed a cappella in a key suited to your range.
  • Sight Reading:
    • 8-12 measure excerpt
    • Level 1: For beginning, intermediate & show choirs
    • Level 2: For advanced choirs & vocal jazz

VOCAL JAZZ

Vocal Jazz Materials
Vocal Jazz Form
Date & Time: March 28, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Location: JHS Choir Room

Preparation:
  • Learn your vocal part for Love Shack before the audition.
  • Auditions will be in small groups with different combinations to assess part accuracy, intonation, blend, and style.

  • Complete the audition form (linked above) before your audition.
  • Vocal Jazz is only open to students in grades 10-12 for next year.
  • If you cannot attend the scheduled audition, email [email protected] to arrange an alternate time.

SHOW CHOIRS

Show Choir Materials
Show Choir Form
Date & Time: March 28, 1:00 – 4:00 PM

Location: JHS Auditorium


Preparation:
  • Learn your vocal part for the Abracadabra excerpt before the audition.
  • Learn the dance to Abracadabra from Nick Quamme on the linked videos.
  • Auditions will be in small groups to assess vocal independence while dancing.​
  • OPTIONAL Prep Sessions: Monday, March 16th 6-8pm & Monday March 23rd 6-8pm.

Choreography:
  • You should come prepared with the choreography from the Video of Abracadabra. Additional movement will be taught on-site the day of auditions. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for dancing.
  • After learning the choreography, you will sing and dance in small groups for scoring and placement into show choirs.
